FREE lipstick by MAC Cosmetics on National Lipstick Day!
The irony. My very first post is about a free lipstick and it's none other than by the awesome MAC Cosmetics. July 29, also known as National Lipstick Day, is revered by lipstick hoarders (such as I) everywhere in the world. It means that most brands will give you great discounts to grab their lipsticks. I did see a few emails and sponsored ads floating around by Indie brands such as Dose of Colors and ColourPop Cosmetics and also mid-to-high-end brands including Stila Cosmetics, Too Faced, Bobbi Brown and Marc Jacobs.
MAC Cosmetics had a sweet promotion going on as well but the icing on the cake was the free lipstick that they were giving away on a first-come-first-serve basis at their boutiques and counters all across the USA. My friend from Dubai informed me and I decided to check it out! I woke up in the wee hours of a Saturday morning and headed to my local Macy's store. I stood 2 hours in line starting at 7 a.m. until the store opened at 9 a.m. My Kindle kept me company!
The free collection that was at Macy's MAC counter was decent. They had a few shades from their regular collection but mainly were giving away the free ones from the Rocker Collection. My main motive for standing in line for 2 hours was to get there early and try to get a shade that would actually suit me. I admire people who rock blue and green lipsticks but it's not my cup of tea. I managed to snag Cyber.
Coming to Cyber, it's a beautiful deep dark purple shade. MAC Cosmetics describes it as intense blackish-purple. It has a satin finish but it's not glossy if that worries you. To get an opaque look, you do have to go in a few times and unfortunately, it is streaky. Using a lip liner (Cyber World is the complementing lip liner for Cyber) would help with this particular shade. Use the liner all over the lips before going in with Cyber. It's not drying thanks to its satin finish, unlike a matte lipstick. This lipstick reminds me of one that I have by Lancôme in the exact same shade and almost the same finish. It's called the Color Design Lipstick and the shade I have is Into the Rapture. It has a cream finish, hence, is a bit more glossy than Cyber. I think this shade is better suited for a matte finish as both these lipsticks have the same characteristics of being streaky and having to build up the color. Having said that, Cyber is better than Into the Rapture. Here are some swatches.
I am a fan of MAC Cosmetics' lipsticks and this one did not really wow me (perhaps that's why it was included in the free pile!). It is a nice dark shade and I do love satin-finish lipsticks, so I will definitely be wearing it, but the formula could do with some improvisation. Satin lipsticks do need more touch-ups compared to their matte counterparts. I did do it after a quick snack, but in my defense, I do that with matte lipsticks as well. You will definitely have to touch-up with this shade. After wearing it for some time, I also noticed that it settled into the fine lines of my lips.
Cyber is one of those universally flattering shades that would look good on all skin tones and can be worn at the holiday season parties. Having said that, I am the kind of person who will probably wear it to work on a summer morning. Ha! I grew up in Dubai and we do not have distinct seasons like the USA does. It's summer all year round with an exception of 2-3 months of basic winter. So, the concept of wearing a shade on the lips or nails based on a season is still alien to me!
This shade is similar to Instigator (though Cyber is darker) and Smoked Purple by MAC Cosmetics. If you are a fan of matte lipsticks, you can pick up Smoked Purple.
Cyber retails for $17 in the USA. I've eyed Diva (another delicious shade) and Cyber for quite some time now. I bought Diva a few months ago and now, I managed to get my hands on Cyber so I am not really complaining.
That's about it! This wraps up my very first blog post. Yay! I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! Have a beautiful day/evening ahead, lovely people!
